Maddy Petz

dancer and choreographer

Joy, excitement, energy; the ability to feel passionate.  As an artist, the opportunity to find the fun within the extensive effort called upon to create is crucial.  The exhilaration of performance drives me as a dancer, but also tasks me with the entanglement of maintaining presence within the process.  There is valuable information arising from each day, each rehearsal and each interaction; the opportunity to learn about life through dance is endless.  Potential to find importance in the tiny, tedious and often laborious moments prior to the thrilling events, makes for an even more outstanding performance  both on stage and in the performance of daily human tasks.

The human capacity to work inspires me.

When I’m dancing I want to feel like I’m working.  Through physical fatigue and precision of technique comes liberation, athletic and full bodied.  This is where I live. When bouncing between, sharp, hard hitting movement to loose body rolling and spiraling, the consistency is in the energy.  The challenge of adapting to any style thrown my way, and to maintain range, keeps me enthusiastic and eager to perform.  Regardless of aesthetic, theatricality is always a constituent. Connection between audience and dancer is the performance.

Art is my gateway to expel light onto others and to simultaneously gain it within.

about me

Maddy Petz is performer and choreographer from Romeo, Michigan.  She earned her BFA in Dance from Wayne State University, located in Midtown Detroit.  With mentorship from Meg Paul, Biba Bell, and several additional influences, she had the opportunity to grow immeasurably into a mature performing artist and emerging choreographer.   Throughout her time in University, Maddy performed extensively.  Working with artists including Twyla Tharp, Ron Brown, Pilabolus, Haleem Rasul and many more, she excels in a wide variety of styles and techniques.  Partaking in intensives with Giordano, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, and Dance Exchange, she was able to further her training and continue to broaden her skills.  In addition to performance, she had the opportunity to present multiple choreographic works of her own as a part of main stage departmental productions, alongside faculty and guest artist work. Musical theatre performance is also one of her great passions; her most recent project including choreography, and performance in the ensemble of Mamma Mia The Musical, under the direction of Scotty Arnold.  Maddy has been dancing nearly her entire life, and has always maintained an energetic, vibrant, presence on stage.  Striving to uphold a positivity throughout her day to day life, she finds great joy within the rehearsal and creative process that dance has to offer.
